By Deb DeArmond

I heard someone on a television show this morning ask, “Who do you think you are?” It was a challenge to another she thought had stepped over some boundary. The tone was demanding, even a bit sarcastic.

It made me laugh. It made me think. Who do I think I am?

I am wife, mom, Gigi. I am friend, sister, daughter, and aunt. I am a business coach, leadership development professional. Writer. Speaker.

I answer to these names. All of them define and describe who I am. But God has called me to be His. His child, daughter, and disciple. He even calls me friend.

Knowing who I am in Christ emboldens me. It strengthens me and empowers me and helps me turn from fear and doubt when it comes knocking on my door. I am a child of the Most High. That’s who I am.

The descriptions and definitions of who I am in this life are always present, and while they are not wrong, they are secondary to who I must see myself to be. To who I think I am.

Dr. Robert Morehead is often credited with the writing below. It is not his, but it’s the story he told of a young Rwandan believer who was faced with this choice: denounce Christ or die. He was unashamed to make his stand for Christ and paid for it with his life. The night before his execution, confined in chains, he wrote “The Fellowship of the Unashamed,” the embodiment of Paul’s proclamation in Philippians 1:21: “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.”

It’s familiar to me. My oldest son memorized and recited it at his Christian Bar Mitzvah. I’ve hidden its truths in my heart. Read it out loud. Let it penetrate your heart’s reality today.

Fellowship of the Unashamed

I am a part of the fellowship of the Unashamed.
I have Holy Spirit power. The die has been cast.
I have stepped over the line.
The decision has been made. I am a disciple of
Jesus Christ.

I won’t look back, let up, slow down,
back away, or be still. My past is redeemed,
my present makes sense, and my future is secure.
I am finished and done with low living, sight walking,
small planning, smooth knees, colorless dreams,
chintzy giving, and dwarfed goals.

I no longer need pre-eminence, prosperity, position,
promotions, plaudits, or popularity.
I now live by His presence, lean by faith, love by patience,
lift by prayer, and labor by power.

My pace is set, my gait is fast, my goal is Heaven, my
road is narrow. My way is rough, my companions few,
my Guide reliable, my mission clear.

I cannot be bought, compromised, deterred,
lured away, turned back, diluted, or delayed.
I will not flinch in the face of sacrifice, hesitate in the
presence of adversity, negotiate at the table of the enemy,
ponder at the pool of popularity, or meander
in the maze of mediocrity.

I won’t give up, shut up, or let up, until I have stayed up,
stored up, prayed up, paid up, preached up for the cause of Christ.

I am a disciple of Jesus Christ. I must go until
He returns, give until I drop, preach until all know,
and work until He stops me. And when He comes to get
His own, He will have no problem recognizing me.
My banner will be clear.

I am a disciple of Christ!!!

Who do you think you are?
