By Peggy Still—

Amid the tumultuous economy, the wars and rumors of wars, and the mistrust of our government officials, America still has more to offer the world. Americans aren’t strangers to difficult times. Throughout our short history we have pulled together, motivated by the God in whom we place our trust. We hold fast to the ideals of freedom of speech and public expression, freedom to worship, freedom from want and from fear.

Today we face the Great Recession, religious persecution, terrorism on our own soil, and a polarized political system that threatens the very freedoms we cherish. America must summon its unity of purpose. That purpose is to once again become a nation under God. Billy Graham said, “Unless America has a spiritual awakening within the next few years, we may be finished as a nation.”

What we have:

–          Moral uncertainty that has led to little joy

–          Zealots of religious freedom, we are weak in our worship of God

–          We have everything, but possess nothing

–          We seek knowledge, yet lack understanding

–          Plenty of upward mobility, but continue to sink lower into dependency

What we need:

–          A rebirth of moral conviction

–          Recognize God as our ruler and guide

–          Sin to be broken in our churches

–          People to be brought to repentance

In affluent America we are so preoccupied with physical comforts and social matters that we ignore the spiritual needs of each other. We have ceased to challenge the world to know the One True God. We must renew the image of Christ in ourselves for the world to follow.

Revival may not begin with leadership, but with the laity. God can use the most unlikely among us to bring about spiritual awakening. God used a woman over two thousand years ago to bring revival to the city of Sychar (John 4). The power of Christ changed her because she repented and then asked for the living water to fill her spirit. Through renewed recognition of spiritual values and giving up our selfish ways we will regain the freedom once again that made America great.
