Do you have dull knives in your kitchen? What would happen if you tossed those old dull knives in a drawer with the sharpener and shook the drawer back and forth for two minutes? My guess is no matter how long you shake the drawer, when you take the knives out and closely examine them, not one of the knives would be sharpened. The truth of the matter is you must take a little time and sharpen each knife one at a time. As you prepare dinner a sharp knife will make all the difference in the world in the meal and your attitude during the prep time.
You may be thinking, how ridiculous, no one just throws their knives in a drawer and shakes it back and forth and really expects the knives to be sharpened. But, that is exactly what we do in the Christian Church with the young women (and men) from generation to generation. We think because we are all sitting in the church pews or chairs week after week and move around together for two hours, we will walk out completely sharpened and ready to face the devil. Now that is a ridiculous thought! The statistics and evidence shows we are not taking Proverbs 27:17 or Titus two seriously to heart. Mentoring is off the radar screen in our churches and my heart’s cry is to change this problem even if it is one person and church at a time.
When we pour our lives into others and help them sharpen their knowledge and application of Scripture to their daily lives we are glorifying the Lord.
This is the exact affect one to one relationships have when we invest in mentoring the next generation. “Iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.” (Proverbs 27:17 NLT)
Mentoring requires listening and sharing God’s Word with someone who needs encouragement. As a mentor, you are available to guide and encourage a young woman in her walk with the Lord.
In some cases, mentoring may be a simple monthly meeting to connect and guide, or it can be a weekly one-hour meeting full of wise godly counsel and encouragement. Some women need a do over or maybe a makeover while others just need a little pick-me-up! In either case, the mentor is sharing God’s Word and drawing the younger woman closer to God.
It’s not too late this fall session to begin a new heart to heart mentoring ministry at your church. The excitement and enthusiasm of the ladies will be contagious as you reach out to the next generation. It is my desire to encourage and challenge you to begin Mentoring and pouring your life into other young woman for Christ. As you do this, they will be blessed and you become a Titus two woman of God. Let’s make a difference in this world for Christ one life at a life.
Will you be the one?
Thanks for the encouragement.
Thanks, also Jayme for the reminder of our calling.
