By Peggy Still—
There is a lot written in the Bible about walking. It makes sense of course because in ancient times unless you had the latest model of a donkey (circa 30A.D.), you walked. In the book of Ephesians Paul outlines God’s hidden plan for all of history, and the good news about His plan for believers. The plan included a lot of walking. Here are a few walks we should take as believers.
– Walk no longer as if we were still sinners (Ephesians 2:2)
– Walk in good works (Ephesians 2:10)
– Walk worthy of the vocation to which we are called (Ephesians 4:1)
– Walk not in the ways of non-believers (Ephesians 4:17)
– Walk in love (Ephesians 5:2)
– Walk in the light (Ephesians 5:8)
– Walk carefully (Ephesians 5:15)
The physical and psychological aspects of walking have been scientifically proven to be positive on us humans. Each time I take a walk I ask myself why I don’t do it more often. Walking clears my mind and gives me quiet time to converse with God. It builds muscle, keeps weight off, causes me to sleep better and awakens my senses to nature. In these scriptures Paul centers on the spiritual awakening of right walking.
We are to walk a new walk, not in the sins of our past. Because we are God’s workmanship, he has created a work for each of us, and we are to walk in those good works. Let’s be clear that good works do not help us obtain favor from God, but works follow naturally as we experience the love of Christ living in us. In return we love others on our walk as He loves us.
Living in darkness separates us from God and hardens our hearts. We run the risk of developing moral insensitivity, silencing our consciences. Light makes all things visible, therefore enabling us to see and make the best of every opportunity that lay before us. Living in evil times we are not to walk in foolishness, but carefully in wisdom.
There’s still a lot more walkin’ to do.
