Fight or flight…how do you respond to temptation?

In my own life, victory over temptation does not always come in the same way.

Sometimes victory arrives after a fierce battle, when I have exhausted every ounce of effort, and the sweat pours down my face, and I have used the last of my energy in prayerful hand-to-hand combat against a barrage of temptation. “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” (Ephesians 6:12 NIV).

Sometimes victory appears as I stand resolute and steadfast, resisting the devil by planting myself firmly in the word of God. The apostle Paul wrote, “Stand firm then….Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” (Ephesians 6:14, 17 NIV).

But I’ve also learned that sometimes the victory is not found in the battle, but in the escape—when the temptation seems overwhelming, and I run into the arms of my heavenly Father for safety, knowing that discretion is frequently the better part of valor, and often the wiser move. Paul also wrote, “Flee from sexual immorality” (I Corinthians 6:18 NIV).

Whatever shape they come in, I have learned to celebrate my victories, knowing they are not dependent on my own abilities and resources, but rather because God’s Holy Spirit encourages and strengthens me. Victory is mine because Jesus has already won it for me on the cross. His resurrection 2,000 years ago proves His victory…and guarantees mine.

“No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out, so that you can endure it.” (I Corinthians 10:13 NIV)
